Wednesday, February 7

Race to Execution

Filmmakers Rachel Lyon and Jim Lopez trace the fate of two Death Row inmates in a revealing look at the factors that influence who lives and who dies at the hands of the state. Following the film, there will be a panel discussion and reception. Free parking available in the museum garage.

The ITVS Community Cinema Series at the museum features sneak previews of films scheduled for upcoming broadcast on the PBS series Independent Lens, and is a collaboration among the City of Oakland, Oakland Film Office, Oakland Museum of California, KQED, and ITVS. History of San Francisco’s Bayview/Hunters Point

The African American Genealogical Society looks at the history of Bayview/Hunters Point. Before, during, and after World War II the shipping industry shaped the area’s identity, people, churches, schools, and the businesses that thrived there. The family history of Sam Jordan, AKA “Mayor of Butchertown,” one of most celebrated African American citizens of the area, will also be examined. In collaboration with the museum’s Docent Council.

Black History

Internationally known storyteller/actor/writer/director Marijo presents African folktales and American stories and instruments from Africa that have become a part of the American musical landscape. This lively interactive performance is sure to delight audiences of all ages. SOLD OUT
