    Staff Report

    Contemporary Extension at SFMOMA
    (Interviewee: Molly Pengra - President)

What is your organization's mission and how is it achieved?
CX cultivates relationships with people between the ages of 21 and 40 to further their knowledge of the contemporary art world and support SFMOMA through edgy and provocative events. We are the "gateway" to SFMOMA and look to demystify the museum and forge a personal connection with young professionals..

Describe the makeup of your organization, i.e. who you want, who you get, and who would you like more of? Why do people join, vs why should they join?
CX is a dynamic group of people between the ages of 21 and 40 who share an interest in modern art and want to play an active role in supporting SFMOMA. People join CX for many reasons but I think the two biggest reasons are for art education and to meet like-minded people. Our membership is really varied. We strive to make the group diverse across many ethnic, social and economic spectrums.

    Benefits to membership include:
    • Invitations to our free monthly events, including special Museum tours, studio visits, artist talks, gallery walks, and visits to collector's homes.
    • Opportunities to attend parties and fundraising galas throughout the year.
    • The chance to participate in SFMOMA Matches, a dynamic touring program that encourages CX members to enrich teens' interactions with modern and contemporary art.
    • Subscriptions to our CX newsletter, cont:ext, and SFMOMA's bimonthly Exhibition and Program Guide.
    • And, of course, free unlimited admission for you and a guest to the Museum, as well as invitations to all exhibition previews at SFMOMA. (Pictured Heather Zehren Albinson, Kay Engel, Elizabeth Herrick)

In what aspect are you most successful? Tell us about your biggest success to date. How do you measure success?
I think we are most successful in our events and programming. CX events are substantive, edgy and provocative. They provide the perfect forum in which to learn more about the arts. Each month, members have the opportunity to attend a variety of educational and social events at the Museum and throughout the city — all designed to engage your senses. These include: cutting-edge curatorial discussions, members-only gallery visits, exclusive tours of collectors' homes, special Museum tours, and truly unique cocktail receptions.

We just had a very successful event at SFMOMA called "Vertigo." We curated a celebrity photography exhibition, had more than 850 attendees and raised almost $60,000 for the museum!

Tell us about something new and exciting that your organization is doing.
We have two big events a year. We are taking a breath before we begin work on our December event. In the meantime, CX is producing some great educational events in July including:.

Are all of your events in San Francisco? Do you participate in community outreach programs?
For the most part, our events are in San Francisco. Occasionally we have artist studio visits or art tours in the greater Bay Area.

Our community outreach program is the Matches Program. When you join CX, you'll have hands-on opportunities to share your passion for art with others. The Matches Program pairs members with junior high and high school art students for a series of special Museum events. It's a unique opportunity for adults to share their enthusiasm for art with a young person who's also interested in art, but may not have the chance to explore the Museum on his or her own.

What is the biggest myth that people have about the art field or parent group that you are affiliated with? What is the most common misperception?
I think some people are intimidated about art and museums in general. CX is here to forge a personal relationship between people and SFMOMA. You don't have to have a degree in art appreciation to attend our events or an exhibit. We all learn together in a fun, relaxed environment.

What is the best way to "test the waters" with your group? If I attend one of your events, what should I expect?
The best way to get involved is to join a committee. Our committees include an events committee, a fundraising committee, and a communications committee. Our Board is made up of 13 very active folks, and we would love to meet you!

If you attend a CX event, you can expect to see us push the envelope. We always have art prominently showcased, in addition to elements for all of your senses: music, live performance art, d้cor, interactive exhibits, plus endless libations and food. (Pictured Dana Castro and Alan Ratliff)
